Baie aux Prunes - a small and quiet beach out on the
SW tip of the island. It looked like it had some decent snorkelling, and we
saw some locals spear fishing off the rocky point for rock lobster and fish. |
|
Baie Longue - We never actually swam on this beach,
just wandered down there for a quick look near our last day.
It's a great looking beach, very quiet and empty on the day we were
there. Maybe next time. |
|
Orient Beach - This is the famous "clothing
optional" beach, perhaps one of the best known in the whole Caribbean.
Being "low season" there were not many people there and we had a large
stretch of the centre of the beach almost entirely to ourselves.
We came here on our first day traveling around the island and we could
not resist the urge for a swim. |
|
Maho Bay / Sunset Beach - This beach is right at the
end of the main runway for the airport and there is a sign telling you to be
careful when planes are landing or taking off because the jet wash might
knock you over.
It's not a huge beach, but it does have a great view of where the sun
normally sets.
Most days we were there came with sunsets that looked like this - lots of
cloud around the horizon. You don't actually see the sun set, but the sky
gets pretty dramatic. |
|
Cupecoy Beach - Our resort was on this beach, though
there wasn't much sand to speak of righth in front of the resort.
There was a bit of an unofficial walking path along the edge of the
cliffs.
We did finally find this one nice stretch of sand in front of the
property just next to ours and had a great swim in the waves.
The shots of the beach looking in at the shore from the water were taken
during the sunset cruise that we took.
Nice to get the other perspective on what the resort looks like and to
see just where there is, or is not, any sand. |
|
Mullet Bay - Never swam here, just sailed past on
the sunset cruise. It is a great long sandy beach though, close to our
resort, but you have to walk across the golf course to get to it. |
|
Dawn Beach - We were only here when we stopped at
the Westin for dinner. But it looked like an excellent beach and, given the
East Coast location, we knew where it got its name. |
|
Great Bay / Philipsburg Beach - The cruise ships
dock here in Philipsburg and it seems likely that many people from the
cruise just shop on Front street and spend the day on this beach. |
? |
Baie Rouge - We really liked this beach. This is
where we went snorkeling one afternoon. There was a great cave / break in
the rock that you could swim into and through. But we didn't have our
cameras with us that day - didn't feel safe leaving them on the beach while
we snorkeled. Too bad. |
