We went to visit a demonstration plantation in Mont Vernon - no longer operating, but the site of what was once a huge acreage for hundreds of years.

They had a "guard cat" named Scoobie who caught (and ate, we think) lizards for lunch.

The also had peacocks and peahens wandering around the property with, of course, some chicks.

Scoobie followed us around the property just to make sure we didn't get lost.

We came home with coffee and rum from the plantation, and fair number of photos.

Here we see some of the buildings - the coffee pans roasting the beans, the old manor house, and the rum distillery room filled with hundreds of old bottles of rum (empty!) displayed to show the artwork over the centuries.

The plaques and audio guide explained the process for extracting the sugar syrup from the canes and distilling the syrup once or twice to make rum.

The property was covered in an assortment of plants - fruits, flowers, herbs, cactus - with explanations of the use or taste or harvesting or importance of each.

Outside the plantation we drove through Orleans and saw these school children. Just like in Philipsburg and everywhere else they were all wearing the school uniform and colours.
